Lot Essay

Designed in the Neo-Classical manner popularised by iiuseppe Maggiolini (d.1814), top embellished with a poetic trophy incorporating a Grecian lyre, this commode's central medallion recalling a sacrifice on the Altar of Love and Homer's Iliad, depicts Andromache embracing the Sacred urn that incarnates Hector's ashes, while her captor Achilles proposes marriage. A closely related commode with ribbon-tied foliate swags is illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Neo Classico Italiano, Milan 1955, av. CCCXXII
