Lot Essay

The scene depicts the courtly amusement Kyokusui no En (zig-zag water game) which was held on the third day of the third month. Amateur poets met on the banks of a stream, down which sake cups were made to float. Every competitor had to compose a poem, after which he had the right to stop a cup and drink its contents.
