Lot Essay

The above demi-parure in the 'giardinetti' style combines all the most attractive features of 18th Century jewellery with its lively colours, naturalistic design and sheer prettiness. Many jewels of this date have been altered or lost, so luck finds these still together although ribbon slides on the reverse of the pendant suggest it came from a necklace. The construction of all three pieces, especially their robust silver backs, points to a possible Portuguese or Spanish origin but the design reflects French jewellery. For the work of Augustin Duflos, a French jeweller who worked for the court in Madrid cf. Recueil de dessins de joaillerie fait par Augustin Duflos, joaillier du roy d'Espagne (1767). Cf. also J.H.P. Pouget Traité des pierres précieuses et de la manière de les employer en Parure (1762) pl.14,35
