Lot Essay

This bird is from Spackman's 1764 set and is of the highest quality that he attained. It appears to have been produced both in this design and in reverse. Longfield, 1979, fig.4 and Longfield, 1980, fig. 19 show a bird facing right but an example facing left as here was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 26 October 1985, lot 35 (one of two) It seems possible that one or other image was in fact produced by Dixon but the framing seems consistent throughout the type.
