Lot Essay

Laurens papier collés executed between 1916 and 1918 were directly linked to his sculptures and constructions. They were both an important source of inspiration and were influenced by his three-dimensional works. The two media were interlinked to the extent that the material he used for both was very similar in spirit - "Les materiaux utilisés sont les équivalents exacts de ceux des constructions: semblablent ordinaires (le carton beige ou le papier d'emballage que évoquent le bois, les papiers noirs ou très sombres en rapport avec la tôle, les rehauts de gouache correspondant à la polychromie) ajustés avec la même minutie, pour un effet tout ainsi calculé." (I. Monodo-Fontaine, Henri Laurens 1885-1954, Frieburg, 1985, p. 49)

Quentin Laurens has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work
