We are indebted to Mr Jean Willy Mestach who, on the basis of a photograph, has identified this stool as Western Songye, from the borders of the Luba Kasaï. The Songye influence is clearly visible in the dynamic forms of what is basically a Luba convention. Such hybrids, considered by some to be decadant, are known to have been produced in the area at the beginning of this century.
