THE ORDINATION OF A MONK. Historiated initial 'C' on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT PONTIFICAL ON VELLUM
[Paris, Workshop of Jean Pucelle, ca. 1330]
Leaf 310 x 215 mm., 22 lines, justification 202 x 138 mm., written in dark brown and red ink in a gothic semi-rotunda (continued on verso). Initial 35 x 43 mm., with full-page marginal extensions of dragons terminating in ivy leaves. Three monks, the first in blue robe, kneeling before the bishop who is anointing him. Diaper ground of gold and blue, the initial rose on blue ground.

A very similar leaf from a Missal is in the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz Kunstbibliothek Berlin, described in the catalogue no. 31 (with illustration) as in the style of Jean Pucelle. The text explains that this is a re-ordination of a monk who had been suspended from holy orders.
