MOSES, AARON AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL IN THE WILDERNESS GATHERING MANNA, ILLUMINATED MINIATURE FROM A MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Rome or Florence, early 17th century]
175 x 485 mm., tempera on vellum. A very colourful scene, the people filling large jars with manna from the ground, tents in the background, set within a baroque surround of green painted leaves, shells and coloured flower. (Some discolouration on upper left hand side not touching any of the figures.)
This is the head, cut from a very large leaf containing the Credo, the first two lines scratched out but still visible 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' and 'Credo in unum Deum'. The scene is described in Exodus 16:4 "Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you".
