DODWELL, Edward. Views in Greece from drawings by Edward Dodwell. London: Rodwell and Martin, 1821.

2° (500 x 330mm.). Title decorated with aquatint vignette, 30 hand-coloured aquatint plates by R. Havell, T. Fielding, F.C. Lewis and others after Dodwell and Pomardi, on guards, text in French and English. (Light offsetting of frontispiece onto title, minor occasional light spotting.) Contemporary purple morocco, panelled in gilt and blind, inner panels decorated with cornerpieces of stylised foliage, central gilt arms of Beriah Botfield, spine gilt in seven sections with gilt square decoration, g.e.

FIRST EDITION, ordinary format on thick paper. The work was issued in six parts from 1819 to 1821; most copies were issued in this format although a few copies were mounted on card in portfolios (Abbey copy and Gennadius Library copy). The plates in this work had been intended to illustrate Dodwell's Tour of Greece, 1819, but the cost of production proved too much and a selection of 30 plates were separately published under this title. Dodwell travelled extensively around the Greek islands from 1801-6 with his artist friend Pomardi. The illustrations for this work were selected from the 400 drawings by Dodwell and 600 by Pomardi. Blackmer 493; cf. Abbey Travel 130.
