Details
SANNAZARO, Jacopo (1458-1530). Liber pastorale nominato Archadio. Venice: Bernardinus Vercellensis, 20 December 1504.

4° (204 x 141mm). (Slight discolouration, a few contemporary inscriptions washed from beginning and end.) 18th-century marbled sheep gilt (slightly rubbed). Provenance: inscription on end-paper '[Singer's] sale by Evans apr. 1818 s8 d6'.

Third edition - the first three were all piracies - of Sannazaro's extraordinarily popular poem. This rare edition, like the previous two, provoked the author's celebrated letter to Marc'Antonio Michele in which he thought that the printers of these three editions should be made to work on a farm or look after pigs. The first authorised edition appeared in the following March at Naples. Gamba 887 (note).
