SAVONAROLA, Girolamo (1452-98). Dell' amore di Gesù, and other works. [Florence: Bartolommeo di Libri, before 17 February 1493].
Chancery 4° (196 x 127mm). Collation: a-b8 c6 (a1r title, woodcut of the crucifixion, a1v blank, a2r Dell' amore di Gesù, b2r Della grandezza della passione del nostro signore Iesu Christo, b3v Contemplatione quando lauo epiedi delli discepoli, b4v Contemplatione sopra diverse passioni di Iesu insino alla croce, b5v Contemplatione di Giesu quando e conficto alla croce, b8r Contemplatione della elevatione del crocifixo in aria, c1r woodcut, Contemplatione circa Iesu gia elevato in aria in su lacroce, c2v Contemplatione delle parole del Salvatore essendo insu la croce, c3v Contemplatione ultima circa Iesu morto & crocifixo, c5r verse contemplations on the crucifixion). 22 leaves. 33 lines. Types: 3:114G (title); 1:97R1 (text). Two crucifixion woodcuts, lombard initials. (A few marginal tears discreetly repaired, corner of b1 repaired affecting a few letters, some light soiling.) Modern polished calf, single gilt fillet border, gilt edges. Provenance: prayer exhortations in a contemporary hand on title.
Probably the THIRD EDITION. Arnim (Schäfer 307) convincingly argues that this edition predates an edition of Savonarola's Libro di compagnia, dated 17 Febrary 1493, in which the title woodcut reappears in a more worn condition. On the same grounds, it also predates the Morgiani and Petri edition (Goff S-168) of the Dell' amore di Gesù.
The Dell' amore di Gesù was apparently written in the late spring of 1492, about the time of his being summoned to the deathbed of Lorenzo de' Medici, whom he reputedly denied to absolve because Lorenzo denied Savonarola's demand to restore the liberties of Florence. This event, even if not entirely factual, combined with Savonarola's powerful Lenten sermons that year to increase vastly his following. His popularity may be guaged in the quick and multiple production of editions of the present tract, which are among some of the earliest of Savonarola's works in print. Audin 34; BMC VI, 658 (IA. 27557); Giovannozzi 142; IGI 8783; R 1379; Sander 6850; Goff Suppl. S-167a.
