Lot Essay

Charles Fasoldt was born in Germany and moved to the United States in 1849. He and his contemporary, Albert Potter, are two of the most reknowned American watch makers who designed and produced their own watches instead of importing them from Switzerland as was the custom of the time. The patent referred to in this watch concerns the double wheeled lever escapement, which he called a chronometer. A similar watch is illustrated in Watches by Clutton & Daniels figure 314, another watch and biographical notes are given on page 238 of Antique Watches by T.P. Kamerer Cuss
