Books from the library of the late George Goyder C.B.E. sold by order of the executors. George Goyder C.B.E. (1908-1997) had been great a collector of books all his life. His early interest in George [William?] Blake developed and brought about the creation of the Trianon Press with Geoffrey Keynes in the 1950's, but his interests were widespread. Of particular interest was the movement of Protestantism from the Continent to England, and the way in which the new Protestant texts influenced the Reformation in England. The various sales of the library of Sir R. Leicester Harmsworth in the 1940's afforded him the opportunity of purchasing a number of Protestant texts, and enabled him to form an exceptional collection of works by Bunyan, several of which are represented here. Other smaller collections include works published by William Pickering as well as his personal reference library. Title page with woodcut border, gothic type, woodcut initials. (Some light staining and soiling.) Red calf gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (spine repaired). Provenance: Richard Munt, Bishop of Killaloe and Kilfenora (bookplate); George Goyder (bookplate and ownership inscription). This work attempted to repudiate the pope while declaring adherence to Catholic orthodoxy. It became known as the 'King's Book', and was a revision and enlargement of the so-called 'Bishop's Book'.
