Lot Essay

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner records that the chapel was founded in 1449 by Richard Quatremayne, Lord of the Manor of Rycote and is 'memorable for its sumptous C17 fittings. The interior is dominated by two great pews flanking the steps to the chancel. Domed and canopied, painted and gilded, they have the brittle and insubstantial air of pageant scenery' (N. Pevsner, The Buildings of England: ?, London, 1966, p.747)

A photograph of the interior of the chapel taken by Piper in 1937 is illustrated as pl.47 in A. West, John Piper, London, 1949
