BERKELEY, George (1685-1753). The Querist, containing Several Queries, Proposed to the Consideration of the Public. Now first Re-printed from the Irish Edition, lately publish'd in Dublin. London: for J. Roberts, 1735-37.
3 parts in one volume, 4° (193 x 120mm). Each part with woodcut ornamental headpiece. (Some very light soiling to first and last leaves). Modern half morocco, speckled edges. Provenance: E.H.W. Meyerstein (letter to the Times May 20th 1926 pasted inside front cover).
FIRST LONDON EDITION. The survival of this rare edition was unknown until its discovery and announcement in The Times in 1926 by E. H. W. Meyerstein. The Querist became of tremendous sociological and economic interest, albeit in the unusual form of a treatise written in questions. Until the rediscovery of this edition, it was assumed that the earliest surviving English edition was that which appeared in 1750 as an appendage to another work (see below). This later edition contained about half the number of questions, with whole issues being removed for discussion at a later time; this copy having 895 queries whilst the later, 1750, edition, has only 595. RARE. Part 2 not in the British Library; three other copies only of parts 2 and 3. Keynes 50, 51, and 52.
