2° (416 x 307mm). 43 pages with engraved border illustrations by William Blake including 4 titles, five plates uncut, watermark '1794 J Whatman'. (Eight illustrations shaved, occasional offsetting, 17 illustrations shaved close to image, 'Explanatory' leaf with neat fore-edge repair.) Contemporary maroon half morocco, morocco corner-pieces, t.e.g. (extremities slightly rubbed).

FIRST EDITION. Illustrations to 'Nine Nights' were planned, but only four were produced; those designs used came from a series of 537 drawings which is now in the British Museum. 'The paper was only marginally larger than the copperplate, and even in some untrimmed copies, parts of the platemarks may not appear.' (Bentley Blake Books, no. 515, pp. 636 to 642.)
