The unusually large dimensions of this illumination and the lack of text, printed or manuscript, on the verso suggest that if it were from a book, it would have been the frontispiece of an antiphonal or other large ecclesiastical text. The composition may have been inspired by Schongauer's engraving of the Crucifixion (Illustrated Bartsch 8, no. 25)
