[QUEEN CAROLINE] -- A comprehensive collection of tracts relating to Queen Caroline. [London, mostly 1820]

6 volumes, 8° (210 x 128mm). 95 tracts (including 2 inserted loose), many illustrated with caricatures (some with contemporary hand-colouring) by George and Robert Cruikshank and others. (Occasional spotting or browning, some joints a little worn.) Contemporary half-calf, spines gilt.

An important collection of pamphlets both for and against Queen Caroline, estranged wife of George IV, at the time of her trial for adultery (widely assumed to have been maliciously instigated, but abandoned out of fear of violent popular unrest). Many of the items (with titles such as The Political House that Jack Built, Jack and the Queen-Killers or The King the Avowed Enemy of the Queen. A New Royal Game of Chess) were put out by radical publishers such as William Hone and Thomas Dolby, who took up the queen's cause as that of the people.
