PLAYS -- an extensive collection of 149 plays in 26 volumes. (Mostly London, late 17th-early 19th centuries.)

26 volumes, 4°, 8° and 12°. 149 plays, mostly separate editions, many engravings (a few lacking titles or otherwise imperfect). Contemporary calf and half-calf, most with morocco labels (some wear, 2 vols rebacked).

This collection is rich in first and early editions of major and minor English plays of the period. From the late 17th-century the collection includes Thomas Otway, Venice Preserved (1682) and The Souldier's Fortune (1687), Nahum Tate, A Duke and no Duke (1685), Aphra Behn, The City-Heiress or Sir Timothy Treat-all (1682), Thomas D'Urfey, The Commonwealth of Women (1686), Thomas Shadwell, The Squire of Alsatia (1688) and others. Later plays include Mrs. Manley, Lucius, the first Christian King of Britain (1717), Charles Johnson, The Generous Husband, or the Coffee-House Politician (n.d., 1710/11), Richard Steele, The Conscious Lovers (1723), Samuel Johnson, Hurlothrumbo (1729), and Richard Sheridan, The Rivals (1775) and A Trip to Scarborough (1781). The collection also includes An Authentic Narrative of Mr. Kemble's Retirement from the Stage; including Farewell Address...[etc] (1817).
