TRACTS - American and others, mainly political, a collection of 75 tracts in 13 volumes. (Mostly London, 18th-19th centuries.)
Most 8°. Contemporary full, half- or quarter-calf, most with morocco lettering-pieces (a little wear).
The collection includes four volumes of tracts (from 1769 to 1776), mostly printed or reprinted by the London bookseller John Almon, relating to American affairs, including The Plea of the Colonies, on the charges brought against them by Lord M.......d and others (1775), A Letter to Lord George Germain (1776), and Candidus (pseud.), Plain Truth; addressed to the Inhabitants of America, containing Remarks on a late Pamphlet, intitled Common Sense (1776). There are also three tracts published at Charleston and Philadelphia in 1823, including Richard Furman's defence of slavery in his Exposition of the Views of the Baptists relative to the Coloured Population of the United States. Other volumes contain pieces on paper money and bullion by John Sinclair and George Canning (1810 and 1811), and pamphlets (including poems) against Gladstone and Disraeli.
