Lot Essay

The medallion frame, with flowered-trellis border, is embellished with Roman foliage, conjoined 'bacchic' dolphins, and the festive badge of the bacchic-thyrsus tied to Venus' scallop-shell. Its 'antique' style relates to that illustrated in George Smith's Collection of Designs, 1803, whose plate 135 explains the ornamental purposes of this type of convex glass
