PYNE, William (1769-1843). The History of the Royal Residences. London: A. Dry, 1819.

3 volumes, 4° (426 x 332mm). 100 hand-coloured lithographs. (Some light spotting.) Contemporary red quarter straight-grained morocco gilt, flat spines (corners rubbed).

William Henry Pyne started his career as a painter, however, he lacked dedication as an artist and his chief contribution to this work is the text; for the illustrations he relied upon the drawings of others, including Mackenzie, Nash, and Pugin. Under the pseudonym Ephraim Hardcastle he made his literary reputation contributing anecdotes and gossip columns to a series of publications. This copy has a one-page ALS from Pyne to 'P. Palmer Esq.' dated Sep. 24th 1818 referring to the 'Crimson Dining Room' tipped into volume III at page 20. LARGE-PAPER ISSUE. Abbey Scenery 396; Tooley 389. (3)
