Lot Essay

An attribution to Aniello Falcone was proposed by Professor Ferdinando Bologna in the Naples exhibition catalogue, loc. cit, where he compares the white cloth under the Saint with that wrapped around the Christ Child in Falcone's 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt' in the Sacristy of the Duomo, Naples. He also notes that the figure of the Saint recalls that in Ribera's painting of 'Saint Sebastian with Saint Irene', known only through copies (see N. Spinosa and A. Pérez Sánchez. L'opera completa del Ribera, Milan, 1978, nos. 352-4)
