Lot Essay

The gun is an interesting example of a multi-bite action incorporating both the standard Purdey bolt (Purdey patent No. 1104) and two further barrel-bolts on either side of the exterior of the breech-ends. Unlike the example given in Crudgington & Baker The British Shotgun Vol. Two, p. 58, which is described as a five bolt gun, the example here is a true quadruple-grip variant as it does not incorporate the additional inert doll's-head extension. Crudgington & Baker further describe a similar action as 'the ultimate in barrel-bolting systems for a drop-down shotgun'!
