Lot Essay

Possibly the abode of the Captain of War on the approach to Benin: 'The house had the usual clay walls ribbed like corrugated iron ... On our left was a similar but shallower niche, containing an altar and its furniture, and opposite it a raised earthbunk, upon which various attendants were clustered.' (My Wanderings in West Africa, pp. 285-6) though the incident recorded on the reverse of the sheet is not mentioned in the text
