For the circumstances of this portrait see lot 43. The background of this watercolour suggests that it may have been done while Dadd travelled with Sir Thomas Phillips up the Nile in a luxurious boat with crew hired from the British consul in Cairo (see Patricia Allderidge, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, 1974-5, loc. cit., and p. 21)
