The Property of THE VISCOUNT ALANBROOKE Sir Victor Brooke, Bart., was born at Colebrooke, the family seat in Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland on 5 January 1843. An immensely active and popular man, he was fascinated from an early age by both field sports and natural history - a passion which was to take him on hunting expeditions in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle and Far East. These trips were invariably combined with study, particularly of oxen, deer, sheep and antelopes, and he had over fifteen essays published in conjunction with The Zoological Society. To further this end he, in the words of Sir William Flower, 'took great pains and went to considerable expense in securing the services of some of the best zoological artists available'. The following watercolours, lots 42-47, were all commissioned by Sir Victor, direct from the artists, and have passed by descent in his family
Joseph Wolf (1820-1899)
