Lot Essay

The picture is an early version of Spring, dated 1911, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1912 and sold in these Rooms on 5 March 1993, lot 40 (repr. in cat.). In Spring more of the coastline is visible, making it a landscape-shaped composition, and in correspondence with this the figure extends her right arm. She also has a garland of daisies on her head instead of the roses seen here. Otherwise the relationship between the two versions is close
