Lot Essay

Christian David Müller was a Dresden portrait painter and co-founder of the Dresden Kunstakademie. A pupil of Anna Maria Werner, née Haid, and Louis de Silvestre II, as court painter to the Elector of Saxony he twice accompanied the court to Warsaw, where he executed portraits of two hundred Polish nobles.

Berckenhagen erroneously assumes the present portrait to be a replica
of that exhibited at the Dresden Kunstakademie in 1778 and now in the Museum der bildende Künste in Leipzig, which shows the sitter full face (his no.1022, illustrated)
