Lot Essay

Schreyer was editor of Der Sturm magazine from 1916 to 1928 and director of the Bauhaus drama workshop from 1921 to 1923. Considered one of the leading avant-garde theatrical and artistic theoreticians of his day Schreyer championed geometrical balance purity of colour, simplicity and movement in both design and performance. He had a marked influence on the work of many Bauhaus artists including Oscar Schlemmer who took over the directorship of the drama workshop from him in 1923. Paintings by Schreyer rarely appear on the market.
