BUDE, Guillaume (1467/8-1540). De Asse et Partibus Eius. Paris: J. Badius Ascensius, March 1514.
2° (325 x 200mm.). Elaborate woodcut title with Badius's device (Renouard's "marque no.1"), woodcut initials. (Slight marginal worming and spotting, occasional soiling.) 18th-century blind-panelled calf, spine gilt (repaired at head). Provenance: Niels Henrik Weinwich (presentation inscription to 'Frideric Münter', dated 1808).
FIRST EDITION of Budé's work on ancient Roman units of measurement and value, which also sought to make the reader reflect on the wealth of the modern age, its social injustices and the abuses of the church. The work established Budé as the leading French humanist of his day, and inspired other leading humanists, such as Thomas More, to correspond with him. Budé later became 'Maître de la Librarie' to François I, and was responsible for the purchase of many books and Greek manuscripts for the royal library.
Niels Henrik Weinwich was librarian to the King of Denmark and author of several books on Scandinavian history and culture. Frederik Münter was an orientalist and archaeologist and, from 1790, professor of theology at the University of Copenhagen. In 1808 he was appointed Bishop of Zeeland: this book was perhaps a gift to commemorate the event. Renouard Badius Ascensius II, p.232, cf. Mortimer/Harvard French 120.
