signed with monogram and dated 1655, on vellum, in a rock crystal frame with gold ropework mounts chased and enamelled with four foliate clusters

Lot Essay

Some restoration in a band down the forehead, over the right eye and to the right of the nose has made the identification of the sitter difficult. It is unlikely to be a portrait of Robert, 4th Baron Brooke, as suggested by Williamson in the Pierpont Morgan catalogue as he was not a Knight of Bath
