The design on which this stool is based was first published by Charles Heathcote Tatham in his Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture drawn from the Originals in Rome and Other Parts of Italy during the years 1794, 1795 and 1796, 1799, pl.46. Tatham's design incorporates carved drapery in imitation of a squab cushion. A stool executed with carved drapery is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (see: F.Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p.52, fig.55) This stool is intended to have a real squab and its drapery.
The stool now in the Victoria and Albert Museum was sold along with its pair by Mrs. Nancy Lancaster, Christie's London, 12 December 1974, lot 32.
