1958 BENTLEY S1 CONTINENTAL TWO DOOR FAST BACK
COACHWORK BY H.J. MULLINER
Registration No. AJH 188A
Chassis No. BC 6EL
Engine No. BC 6E
Two tone green with red leather interior
Engine; six cylinder, 4,887cc; Gearbox; four speed automatic; Brakes; four wheel drum; Suspension; front, independent, coil springs, rear, live axle with semi-elliptic springs. Right hand drive.
The S1 model was introduced in April 1955, with a longer wheelbase than the previous R-Type, a completely new and larger body style and the final 4.9-litre version of the classic six cylinder engine. It was replaced in 1959, by the S2 using the first V8 engine.
Following the success of the H.J. Mulliner Continental Fast Back design, the S1 series offered the same sporting version. It was based on the previous R-Type high performance chassis, having a high compression engine with larger inlet valves, a high axle ratio and special tyres designed to give less rolling resistance. Performance was slightly improved with a top speed of 124mph and a brisk 0-80mph in just over 20 seconds.
This 1958 E-series is elegantly finished in two tone pale green with a red coachline on the waist. The interior is finished in red leather upholstery which has a nice patina to it and the carpets are in matching red. The woodwork is exceptionally good. Whilst the MoT expired in March the engine is running very well and the car seems mechanically sound and well maintained. The car sports both BDC and RREC badges on the bumper bar on either side of the central fog light. There is one very small crease on the rear near side wing and the front bumper could perhaps benefit from rechroming. This is an extremely presentable example of the marque.
The Bentley Continental Fastback set new standards of motoring pleasure which are still applicable today, and these relatively rare coachbuilt silent sporting cars are amongst the most coveted of post-war Bentley models.
