Lot Essay

Note: The overprint forme for the "broad" halfpenny was one of five rows of twelve impressions. It is thought that all sheets were overprinted with the top five rows, then all sheets with the second application on the next five rows and so on. This would explain why some varieties occur four times in a sheet, for example the dropped "H", and others just once, for example the spaced "NY" from the last application of the forme. In the case of the double overprint above, the last application of the forme was one row tto high resulting in row 15 being doubly overprinted.
