Lot Essay

This sideboard-pedestal urn is designed in the George III 'antique' or 'Etruscan' manner popularised by R. & J. Adam's Works in Architecture, 1774. Its quality relates to the work of Messrs. Gillow of London and Lancaster, and to a design illustrated in their 1788 Cost Books (see: R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed., 1954, London, vol. III, p. 138.)
