This view was taken from a oil painting by Carl Daniel Freydanck completed in 1843, see I and W. Baer, Carl Daniel Freydanck 1811-1887 Ein Vedutenmaler der Königlichen Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin KPM, no. 24. Carl Daniel Freydanck (1811-1887), an oil painter, was employed by the KPM factory between 1837 and 1848. He painted numerous views of Berlin and its environs which were then copied on to porcelain by the factory's best artists.
Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, made several alterations to the park at Sanssouci. In 1842 he replaced the oval lake by a large round one and by 23 October 1842 the fountains, which had been so favoured by Fredrick the Great, were fully restored; these enormous jets were to become Potsdam's main attraction. The sculptures were grouped round the new lake and a lawn was laid down in the front on which was placed the porphyr bust of Paolo Giordani Orsini, Duke of Bracciano. The wrought-iron railings across the Schafgraben were constructed by Schinkel in 1836. It is interesting to compare this view with the same view painted some nine years earlier on the Berlin vases presented to Count von Lottum see lot 215
A garniture of three vases painted with views after Freydanck was sold by Sotheby's Geneva, 15 November 1988, lot 50
