A MASSIVE KHORASSAN SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRONZE MORTAR of cylindrical form with wide flat foot and similar rim, the foot inlaid with panels of alternating silver kufic and copper naskh inscriptions divided by copper crescent roundels, with similar smaller band above, the body with three raised rings, the middle one with rope-pattern inlay dividing bands of knotted arabesques, drop-shapes and flowerheads, the rim with panels of alternating arabesques and crescents on arabesques betwen addorsed birds alternating with harpie panels within scrolling vine borders divided by raised lobes, (negligible wear, some loss of inlay), and AN ASSOCIATED BRONZE PESTLE with flaring base straight shaft and hatched terminal boss, the shaft decorated with a fluted band patterns and medial boss, both 13th century
