Lot Essay

The celebrated marble statue of the Venus de Milo was excavated on the island of Melos in March 1820. Upon it's arrival in France, where it was shipped by the Marquis de Rivière, it was presented to Louis XVIII who in turn presented it to the Louvre where it was displayed in 1821.
