Lot Essay

This bed and the following lot are designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' manner of the 1770s, and embellished with porcelain plaques of pastoral subjects in the style of ?????????. The bed-posts formed as pedestal-supported and garland-bearing caryatid nymphs and surmounted by tripod-based casolettes. The armoire is flanked by nymph 'herm' pilasters bearing corn and grapes, emblematic of summer and winter. The bed head medallion depicting a courting couple. Chrétien Dietz opened his magasin in the rue Royale-Saint-Honoré in 1864, at a time when decorative porcelain-mounted furniture, associated with the Marie Antoinette style, had become highly fashionable
