The Property of Edmund Penning-Rowsell Esq A REMARKABLE PRIVATE CELLAR OF VINTAGE PORT, MADEIRA, CLARET AND COGNAC Recently removed from Mr Penning-Rowsell's cellar in Oxfordshire and now lying London, S.E.1 except for lots 1 to 2, 4, 5, 12 to 13, 14, 16 and 124 to 129 which are lying at Christie's Labels are bin-soiled unless otherwise stated Edmund Penning-Rowsell, who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year has been referred to as "the Dean of Bordeaux". For many years wine correspondent of The Financial Times he is probably best known to wine lovers for his authoritative tome The Wines of Bordeaux. He was also a long serving Chairman of The Wine Society (The International Exhibition Wine Society). It is important to note that the majority of the wines in this sale, certainly all the post-war and more recent Bordeaux vintages, were cellared shorty after the original shipment to London of each vintage and have remained undisturbed until packed and delivered to Christie's warehouse The cellar itself is remarkable: unusually high, barrel vaulted with a stone flagged floor beneath the old three-story stone built house in a village near Woodstock. Conditions perfect for the storage and long maturation of fine wine: unvarying cool temperature and English country house humidity accounting for the slight bin-soiling of some of the long binned wines. The contents of this sale amount ot a thinning out following the accumulations of many years. In fact the cellar still looks full. (MB)

Ferreira--Vintage 1847
Faded label. Label level into neck
Ferreira's cellar of old vintages in Vila Nova de Gaia is without equal. 1847 was unquestionably the greatest vintage of the period and, according to their records, Ferreira's sweetest wine of the century. It is still very sweet and perfectly balanced.(MB)
