Harveys of Bristol, whilst still family owned, had a long tradition of keeping back some of the best pipes of Bristol Cream and Bristol Milk, as they were known, for further maturation in bottle. The are excellent, with a rich tanginess and length of flavour quite different - if we may be permitted to say so - from the modern commercial blends. As a matter of interest the earliest existing record of Bristol Cream occurs in a Christie's wine sale catalogue of July 1880. Catalogued as "Choicest old Pale Sherry, "Cream", bottled in 1862, over 22 dozen bottles from a private cellar in South Wales sold for an average of 260 shillings per dozen the second highest price in a vast cellar sale which included Montrachet and almost twice the price of the renowned Lafite 1864.(MB)
