A similar still life is recorded in Frank Lewis' book Edward Ladell 1821-1886. It describes a picture recorded in the Western Daily Mercury by a reporter viewing the painting before it left the artist's studio "a pheasant and a wild pigeon are resting on a hamper, at foot of which lie a black-cock and a mallard, and on the right of the picture are a whole and a cut rock melon, with plums and a bunch of grapes, and a peach carelessly cast on a ravelled mat covering the ground. A handful of prawns in the foreground."
