Callow visited Germany in August 1852. In Brunswick 'an attendant placed in my hands the dried heart of the Duke who lost his life in trying to rescue some lions during an inundation' (William Callow, An Autobiography, London, 1908, p. 107), and in Leipzig Callow saw Bach's monument.
