Lot Essay

The Michelangelesque proportions of the figure recall early works by Tibaldi, such as The Adoration of the Shepherds in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. The expressionless features and the smooth handling of chalk in the British Museum study for the seated sibyl in the Borghese painting recall those of the present sheet, J.A. Gere and P. Pouncey, Artists working in Rome c.1550 to c.1640, London, 1983, I, no. 268, II, pl. 255
