Theodore B. Starr was born in New York in 1837. He opened his first business in 1862 and was joined by Herman Marcus in 1864 to become Starr & Marcus. In 1877 Marcus left the company to work with Tiffany & Co. when Starr bought out his partner and the name reverted to Theodore B. Starr until 1923
