Lot Essay

Compare the pair of very similar deer, but with predominantly green bodies, in the Royal Collection at Hampton Court Palace, London. See also the pair, sold in these Rooms, 13 July 1959, lot 19, from the collection of the Marquis of Exeter, when it was suggested that they were "possibly the 'two browne painted staggs' mentioned in the 1688 inventory of Burghley House". Two further pairs, the property of Lady Sarah Roubanis, from the collection of the late Madame Consuelo Vanderbilt Barsan, were sold in these Rooms, 24 June 1968, lots 57 and 58; a pair of similar ewers and covers was sold in these Rooms, 1 November 1982, lot 371, and illustrated by A. du Boulay, op.cit., p.291; and an ormolu-mounted pair, from the collection of the late Nigel G. K. Campbell, Esq., M.C., sold in these Rooms, 6 November 1995, lot 133.
