Lot Essay

'The Clothes Line' was painted in 1879 and Ruskin commented on the picture for the coloured handkerchief which he said introduced a jarring note into the composition. The handkerchief is absent from this study, see I. Taylor, Helen Allingham's England, Exeter, 1990, p. 63.

Allingham used the London model Mrs Stewart as the central figure in the watercolour
