Lot Essay

A pair of Louis XIV pedestals, en suite save for the form of the plinth, was formerly in the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy and is illustrated in M. Rheims, 'La Collection Privée d'Hubert de Givenchy', Connaissance des Arts, p.266.

The distinctive marquetry panels to the sides, with a tasselled platform above foliate arabesques, would appear to be of the same template as that used on the pedestals attributed to André-Charles Boulle that were sold anonymously at Ader, Picard, Tajan, Paris, 15 November 1983, lot 54, while the identical angle-mounts feature on the pedestal of the Apollo clock at the Palais de Fontainebleau (illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Francaise, n.d., Paris, p.39).
