Inlaid overall with geometric banding and cross-banding, the later breakfronted rounded rectangular rouge griotte marble top above a black leather-lined writing-slide to the right and a fall-front with brown leather-lined writing-surface enclosing to the top a horizontal tambour shutter above a cylindrical tambour shutter and two long drawers, the lower section with two doors enclosing twelve leather-fronted card compartments with the arms of the Mesmes family above a shaped apron, the rounded, simulated-flute angles headed by a C-scrolled and husk-trailed mount above short cabriole legs terminating in foliate scrolling sabots, stamped to the top of the carcase 'EVALD' and inscribed in pencil '64', the marble inscribed to the underside in black chalk '1 Bed Room' and numbered '53383-X', the upper tambour of the sécretaire originally with further applied decoration, probably of leather, the leather armorial boxes possibly replaced

Maurice-Bernard Ewald (Evald), maître in 1765.
The arms are those of Jean-Jacques IV de Mesmes (1675-1741) of dit le bailli de Mesmes, who was elected Chevalier de Malta in 1676 and of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem in 1696.
